Delovery Mobile App

2023 | UI/UX

A mobile app designed to help provide daily necessities to homeless users by connecting them with people that would like to donate.

Problem

The problem that my app addresses is homeless people’s access to daily necessities. Many homeless people are unable to afford daily necessities and other supplies. While many people are willing to help, they don’t know what each homeless individual need specifically or feel hesitant to ask them directly in person.

Research

Homeless population

  • As of 2022, about 60% men, 38% women

  • About 30% of total homeless population are families

  • About 5% are unaccompanied youth under the age of 25

Cause

  • Economic challenges - dearth of affordable housing, lack of employment opportunities, low wages; job loss, car troubles, illness, divorce, abandonment, unexpected expense

  • Psychological or physical abbilities - “Domestic abuse is the leading cause of homelessness among women, and a shocking 84% of homeless women have experienced severe physical or sexual abuse at some point in their lives.”

Necessities

  • Deodorant, hand sanitizer, blanket, first aid kit, water/bottled water/water bottle, clothing, flashlight, dental floss, toothbrush & toothpaste, comb, food, personal hygiene items, raingear, transportation passes, socks, lip balm, feminine hygiene products, sunscreen

Personas

I created two different personas with Xtensio, for the two main audience groups that will be using this app.

  • Homeless woman with a newborn baby girl - She’s in desperate need of baby supplies, including baby clothes, diapers, toys, etc. She’s having a hard time taking care of the baby while being homeless, and she can’t afford these necessities. Her baby is growing up fast and outgrowing her clothes.

  • Asian woman with a 4 years old daughter - She and her husband are not planning on having a second child. And they would like to give away the baby supplies that they no longer need. She has seen pregnant homeless women on the streets in the past, and feels empathy towards them. But she’s a bit hesitant to approach them, and doesn’t know exactly what they need.

Sketches

I started off with sketching ideas on paper, then testing with my peers, getting feedback and iterating.

Wireframe

Then, I developed the sketches into wireframes.

User Testing

Who I tested with

  • 5 Users in total

  • 2 men 3 women

  • Age 19-23

  • Undergraduate students

  • Different ethnicity backgrounds

  • Located in Davis

If I had more time, I want to test with more users, and more diverse users.

Tasks I tested

  • Log in page - log in to the app

  • Request page - requesting 1 sleeping bag (standard size, for summer) at pickup location A

  • Donate page - donating a sleeping bag to a specific person, at drop off location B on 6/15/2023 12pm-4pm.

Feedback summary

  • Specification can be drop downs, instead of typing, so more accurate and less effort for the users

  • Can still have an optional specification section for users that would like to add more details

  • Having both a back button and an "x" button is confusing

  • Colors can be better

  • Add a logo, maybe a short description, so that users know what this app is and not confused

  • Emphasis users are choosing a pickup location not other location (maybe show live location of the user?

  • Have a list for locations, not just the map, for people who are not good with maps

  • Remove the background for the back button

  • The last back to homepage can be timed and automatically go back (already edited)

  • Forgot to make the headers fixed

  • Larger font for the grey texts

  • Don’t like the back button on the last page
